Chef (2014)

Starring: Bobby Cannavale, Dustin Hoffman, John Leguizamo, Jon Favreau, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sofía Vergara

The story revolves around Carl Casper, played by Jon Favreau, a chef who lost his restaurant job and decided to start a food truck. Upon deciding to start again after a dispute with a food critique, he communicated with his ex-wife and son for his plan.

Aside from showcasing delicious food, we will see how millennial the movie is – twitter and viral posts are some of the things included in Chef.

Chocolat (2001)

Starring: Juliette Binoche, Johnny Depp, Lena Olin, Judi Dench, Alfred Molina, Peter Stormare, Carrie-Anne Moss, Leslie Caron

Chocolat is a drama film that is about family, (food) temptation and France. An unknown and quite mysterious mother and child arrive in a town in France in the winter of 1959. They might be new in the place, but they were able to attract the people to their unique chocolate shop.

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs (2009)

A science fiction comedy film which got its inspiration from a 1978 children’s book by Judie and Ron Barett (book with the same name as of the movie) is Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs. The movie is about an aspiring and hard-working young scientist who aims to do something great. Flint Lockwood then invited a machine that magically transforms water into food. The device is called “Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator” (FLDSMDFR). The adventure continues when there has been a problem with the FLDSMDFR.

Haute Cuisine (2012)

Starring: Catherine Frot, Arthur Dupont, Jean d’Ormesson

Haute Cuisine is based on the story of Danièle Mazet-Delpeuch, a well-known chef in the country of France. The film revolves around the journey of Hortense Laborie (the chef) as she is chosen to be the personal cook of the president, played by Jean d’Ormesson. Like what they say, it’s not an easy way going and staying up. She experienced lots of hatred from other kitchen staff. Nevertheless, she exhibits professionalism in her craft.

Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011)

Starring: Jiro Ono

Jiro Dreams of Sushi is an American documentary film which shows the life of Jiro Ono, an 85-year-old sushi master. Jiro Ono owns and runs Sukiyabashi Jiro, a Michelin acclaimed restaurant in Tokyo, Japan. Aside from portraying Jiro Ono, the documentary also profiled Jiro’s sons who seem to inherit his love for food and sushi making.

Kailangan Kita (2002)

Starring: Aga Muhlach, Claudine Baretto

The film revolves around Chef Carl Diesta, a Filipino chef who seems to get the hang of being a celebrity chef in New York. He went back to the Philippines to marry his fiancée. Unfortunately, his lady is not yet in town, and Chef Carl is left with his girl’s family in Bicol. His fiancée’s father does not seem to like him. Through his short stay, he gets to know the other family members including Lena, played by Claudine. Sharing food recipes and techniques, what else they could share as well?

My Big Love (2008)

Would you ever date a plus-size guy?

My Big Love is about Macky, played by Sam Milby, a good man with a big heart for people and his craft as a chef. He is nice and he almost got everything that one lady is looking for. Unfortunately, his dream girl Nina, Kristine Hermosa, rejects him as she might be quite disappointed with how Mack looks. Looking for the best in Macky is Aira, Toni Gonzaga, Macky’s fitness instructor who motivated him to start and continue his goal to be fit.

What will happen in this story and adventure about food and love?

Ratatouille (2007)

Starring: (Voice over) Patton Oswalt, Ian Holm, Lou Romano, Janeane Garofalo, Peter O’Toole, Brad Garrett, Brian Dennehy, Peter Sohn

A movie about following your dreams and staying truthful is Ratatouille. Remy, an ambitious rat and at the same time gifted with culinary skills is very much inspired by his idol Chef Auguste Gusteau. He wants to be a chef someday but obviously; it would be very hard since he is a rat. Fortunately, he stumbled upon a young man Alfredo Linguini. Through some instances, they discovered that they could actually work together in a restaurant by Remy controlling Alfredo’s movement by pulling his hair.

What will happen to the culinary adventure of the two? Will they ever be successful in the world they chose?

Spinning Plates (2012)

Starring: Grant Achatz, Cindy Breitbach, Mike Breitbach

If you want to watch something real, why not view Spinning Plates? It is a documentary about three restaurants and the people behind these. They are extraordinary and unique on its own. One restaurant is a seventh-best in the world, second is a 150-year old family restaurant, and another one is a Mexican restaurant. Each has an interesting story to tell.

Tampopo (1985)

The plot of Tampopo goes around the journey of truck drivers having a chance upon eating in a small ramen house. They were offered to eat some noodles, and when asked about their comments, the group didn’t seem to like the food. The team worked together in making the noodles more extraordinary.

During the process, they then agreed to change the name of the restaurant from “Lai Lai” to “Tampopo.” More than the main story of Tampopo, there are lots of elements and subplots you should watch out in this movie. This Japanese comedy film will surely get you hooked.

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

Starring: Ralph Fiennes, F. Murray Abraham, Mathieu Amalric, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Bill Murray

What do we look forward to when going to hotels? Aside from the cozy and homey ambiance, we also look for the top catering services and facilities, right? The Grand Budapest Hotel, an American-German-British co-production film, goes about the glory days of the hotel and the challenges they face. The film has been internationally acclaimed for no simple reasons. It is a must-watch!

The Lunchbox (2013)

Coming from the movie poster: can you fall in love with someone you have never met?

The Lunchbox is an Indian romantic film exploring around the plot of a man mistakenly receiving a lunchbox. There is Saajan Fernandes, a widow who is thinking to leave his job as an accountant. Ila, a young lady married to a man in which their relationship seems to be loose already. Ila wants to bring the happiness and romance back in their relationship, and one way she thought of is by giving his husband delicious food in a lunchbox.

Unfortunately, due to a complicated system in picking up and delivering lunches, there has been a mix, and Saajan receives the lunchbox by Ila. How do you think Saajan will fall for Ila if he hasn’t met the lady?

The Trip to Italy (2014)

Starring: Rob Brydon, Steve Coogan

Rob has been ordered to visit Italy and go for a road trip, following the footsteps of great Romantic poets. Steve joins the trip and then together, they experienced and tasted Italy’s finest. They talk about their career and life.

Toast (2010)

Starring: Oscar Kennedy, Victoria Hamilton, Colin Prockter

The movie is set in Wolverhampton 1967. A young boy by the name of Nigel Slater loves his beautiful yet hopeless cook mom. Nevertheless, she was able to give the best toast to his beloved son thus starting the flame of cooking in Nigel. The story gets to be interesting when the mother passed away leaving Nigel with his father and his goal to be a good cook.

There are many things you should look out for in the Toast – your aspirations, self-expression, and identity.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)
