Visiting Ilocos Region

People are commonly on the look for something great and new – be it in food, places, and company. Maybe that explains why we love to travel and explore the world. Why should we go far if we haven’t visited our famous locations, right? Region one or the Ilocos Region is one of the places we should not miss to go. This might not be your typical venue idea, but Ilocos is one for the books!

Ilocos Region homes the following: Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, La Union and Pangasinan. Given these number of places, there are many things, food and places one can enjoy. So what can we do in Ilocos Region?

Eat and drink!

venue-ilocos-empanadaTravelling is never complete without tasting the delicacies or famous drinks and dishes of the place. Ilocos Region can give what you are looking for. So what are the well-loved Ilocos’ food?

Bagnet: If you love lechon and crispy pata, there’s no reason why you would not fall in love with bagnet. Perfect with suka and rice, the crispy deep friend pork meat will make you feel like a kid again. Tastes like childhood, eh?

Longganisa: Nothing beats the signature longganisa from the Ilocos Region. Not quite sure how does the longganisa from Ilocos taste so well. Perhaps the garlic and special ingredients give it a little more kick and flavor.

Dinengdeng: Similar to chop suey and other vegetable soup is the dinengdeng. The Ilocos version of the vegetable soup is with an extra taste of saltiness. It is still like the usual soup with lots of vegetables, but it’s with bagoong. Curious how it is like? Why not try the original recipe in Ilocos?

Igado: This dish is pork meat and liver in soy sauce and vinegar. Igado is not adobo as the pork meat is sautéd in soy sauce and vinegar mix.

Poqui-Poqui: Another classic Ilocos dish is poqui-poqui. You would better understand the smoked-eggplant dish if you try it yourself.

Fusion Pizza: As we love catering and restaurant food, pizza included, we are in a constant search for something new. In Ilocos, particularly in Saramsam Restaurant and Herencia Café, you will see unique pizza toppings like pinakbet and dinuguan. Maybe by now you are very much curious and intrigued on how it tastes, but they say that is very yummy and worth a try!

Empanada: When you say Ilocos, you’ll hear the word empanada next to it. The classic Ilocos empanada is crunchy on the outside and chewy inside. It is quite hard to explain how this small wonder tastes so good. Vegetable, egg, and meat all in together and yum, yum!

Basi: A local beverage from Ilocos, basi is made from sugarcane. It is fermented and processed to give the extract and eventually form itself into an alcoholic drink.

The list is longer than this, but we believe others are better experienced and tasted than reading, right?

Surfing in the La Union

venue-surfing-la-unionIf you can’t catch some waves in Baler, Aurora, you need not go further. One of the best places to go surfing in the Philippines is the La Union, particularly in San Juan. As region one is very close to the West Philippine Sea, you can expect some huge waves and a big splash of water.

San Juan, La Union, is considered to be the Surfing Capital of Northern Luzon. Why not, right? If you are a beginner in the sports of surfing, there are a lot of tutorial services offered along the beach. Aside from it’s the perfect place to chill and learn a new sport, you may want to consider this fantastic place to be the venue for your next event.

The usual surfing hype in San Juan, La Union, is from July to March every year. Nevertheless, you may opt to visit the place any time to enjoy the incredible scenery and have fun in swimming.

Cordillera Mountain Range

The Cordillera Mountain Range may not be technically positioned in the region 1 or Ilocos, but since it is one of the longest of its kind in the world, it stretches from different areas.

Cordillera Mountain Range helps block off strong typhoons entering Ilocos. Isn’t it wonderful? Enjoy the beauty of nature by visiting Cordillera Mountain Range. Who knows, someone might be planning to hold a one of a kind wedding ceremony in this mountain range? Exciting!

Buying in the Bangus Capital of the Philippines

Located in the province of Pangasinan, Dagupan is said to be the Bangus Capital of the Philippines. Rich in healthy and clean waters, Dagupan has been able to maintain the culture of healthy fishes, particularly of Bangus. The fish can reach 1.70 meters, but the usual sizes of their exports are 39 inches to 1 meter only.

Given that their economy and culture is very much linked to Bangus, Dagupan celebrates Bangus Festival every April as a thanksgiving to a bountiful fish harvest. Enjoy lots of activities such as float parade, Bangus rodeo, and cooking competition.

Of course, you won’t get be bored and dried with eating bangus. There are lots of attractions in Dagupan, too! Some might even be perfect for your beach wedding venues like Tondaligan Beach and Bonuan Blue Beach. You may also pay a visit to Dagupan City Museum, San Roque Dam, Japanese-Philippine Friendship Garden, and Pantal River.

Throwback at Ciudad Fernandina (Vigan)

venue-calle-crisologoCiudad Fernandina is what we know now as Vigan. Probably one of the best venue to hold a classic and romantic wedding is this small town in Ilocos. Vigan is even recognized by the UNESCO as a world heritage. So expect that there a lot of things you can do and places to visit.

In an article of Rappler, they mentioned 12 fantastic things you can do in Vigan. You can explore Calle Crisologo, perfect during dawn. This street is the hub of photographers as it will give you a major throwback feels with its cobble-stoned road and houses. Moreover, aside from the beautiful scenery, Ilocos is famous for their longanisa. Café Leona is one of the well-known Vigan restaurants which offers delicious longanisa.

You can also go for a short cruise in Mestizo River and visit the Bantay Bell Tower, which is resting beside St. Augustine Parish. In other words, there are many things you can do in Vigan. Get your cameras and feet ready because you will surely enjoy your trip in Ciudad Fernandina.

Know more about Pasong Tirad and Bessang Pass

If you’re a history buff, you would love to go to Pasong Tirad and Bessang Pass.

The Battle of Tirad Pass is one of the fights led by the youngest general in the Philippines, Gregorio del Pilar. Back in December 1899, President Aguinaldo and Filipino soldier troops are running away from the Spanish forces. President Aguinaldo and some men are successful in escaping. Gen. Goyo chose to be left so they can secure the area. Unfortunately, there was a traitor in the Philippine troop and led the Spaniards in the other route in Pasong Tirad. It resulted in the death of most soldiers left with Gen. Goyo, including himself.

On the other hand, the battle of Bessang Pass occurred during the Japanese colonization. For sure, you will be getting more stories and accounts from the locals of Ilocos Sur.

Get some air in Bangui’s Windmill

venue-windmill-banguiAnother famous attraction in region one are the Windmills in Bangui. The wind farm in Ilocos Norte uses 230 feet high Vistas. No need to worry if you are thinking about the possible disadvantages of the wind farm to the people residing there. The place is not developed and perfect for windmill installation, as the area seems to gather a good amount of wind.

Perfect for pictorials and quick stroll. Go there with your travel buddy or favorite tropa, or by yourself. You will surely enjoy the breezy place!

Be amazed at the ever-famous Hundred Islands

venue-hundred-islandsLocated in Alaminos, Pangasinan is the Hundred Islands. The National Park is not just hosting 100 islands but about 120. What makes this attraction one of a kind and beautiful to see is its wonderful formation. They are like cloudy green mushrooms sprouting in the middle of the sea.

Hundred Islands have three main islands – Governor’s Island, Quezon Island and Children’s Island. These three are few of the biggest ones in the National Park. Many services are being offered in these islands such as a picnic, cottage rental, guest house and table rentals. Aside from visiting the three top islands, you can go for an island hopping readily available at the entrance of the national park.

Though there are transient and room rentals available, you may opt to choose camping by the beach. It is allowed in the area, but you decide it at your risk. Given that it is a rural area expect that not all spots have a good cellular signal. No electricity and water source for drinking, so you need to bring on your own. Nevertheless, if you are aiming to disconnect from the busy and noisy world of the Metro, going for camping is an excellent way to reconnect with yourself and nature.

We hope this article will be of help when you plan to visit the region. Enjoy and have fun!

Marriage and Celebration: Churches in Manila

The month of June, as known in the Philippine tradition as the wedding month, came and went like a breeze of the wind on a rainy day, but that is not a reason for soon-to-be-wedded couples and planners alike to stop finding the perfect church to celebrate the love and exchange of vows. In order to help people to find their perfect venue for their special day, here are some of the best and most sought-after wedding churches in Manila.

San Agustin Church

Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción de María de San Agustín

Order of St. Augustin

Intramuros, Manila

Did you know that this beautiful church is not the original establishment? The first one was built in 1571 using bamboo and nipa. Unfortunately, it was burnt down in December 1574. After which, the second establishment was then again destroyed by flames in February 1583. Given its harrowing experiences, the Augustinians decided to build the church using stones. The construction started in 1586 and declared finished on January 19, 1607.

San Agustin Church is declared National Historical Landmark by the government and is also a World Heritage Site stated by UNESCO.

Manila CathedralManila Cathedral

Catedral Basílica Metropolitana de Manila

Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception

Plaza de Roma, Intramuros, Manila

Manila Cathedral was built in 1581, having the title of one of the oldest churches in the country. It has gone through several renovations and reconstructions for many reasons. Now, this neo-Romanesque cathedral flaunts beautiful mosaics, stained0glass windows, and marble and metal wares.

Some of the famous couples to tie the knot in Manila Cathedral are Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion, Dodot Jaworski and Mikee Cojuangco, Nyoy Volante and Mikkie Bradshaw, and Roselle Nava and Allen Tan.

San Sebastian Church

Basílica Menor de San Sebastián

Order of the Augustinian Recollects

Plaza del Carmen, Quiapo, Manila

The construction of San Sebastian Church was done in 1891. It fashions the revival of Gothic architecture in the country. Having said that, San Sebastian Church is the only all-steel church in the Philippines and only prefabricated steel church in the world. Given its uniqueness and beauty, the Philippine government hailed San Sebastian Church as a National Historical Landmark in 1973.

Additional fun fact about this church is that fire and earthquakes have destroyed it for a couple of times (1651, 1859, 1863, 1880). The then parish priest Esteban Martinez hoped to have a church that can resist said calamities and destructions.

Binondo ChurchBinondo Church (Minor Basilica of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz)

Parroquia Basílica de San Lorenzo Ruiz y Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario

Founded by Dominican Priests

Binondo, Manila

You might be wondering why the Minor Basilica of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz or Binondo Church seems to be not your usual Catholic Church. Apparently, it is located in Chinatown or the District of Binondo, Manila. It was said that St. Lorenzo Ruiz, offspring of a Chinese father and Filipino mother, used to train in this church. He is the first saint from the Philippines as Pope John Paul II canonized him in 1987.

Since it is in the heart of Chinatown, you will hear the mass celebrated in Filipino, Mandarin, Hokkien and English languages.

Malate ChurchMalate Church (Our Lady of Remedies Parish)

Dedicated to Nuestra Señora de los Remedios

Malate, Manila

Standing near Manila Bay and Plaza Rajah Sulayman is the Malate Church. Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is the patroness of childbirth. Given such, you will see the revered statue of Virgin Mary as Our Lady of remedies. It came from Spain dated back in 1624.

Though we see it now as beautiful and charming as ever, like other old churches in the country, it has survived numerous damages. During the British occupation in 1762, the church has been their headquarters, standing many damages to its structure. A typhoon in 1868 also inflicted serious harm in Malate Church. Aside from that, it was burned down during the Japanese occupation. Nevertheless, after all the hardships it has been through, Malate Church stood tall.

UST ChurchSantísimo Rosario Parish (UST Chapel)

Founded by Dominican Priests

Sampaloc, Manila

Msgr. Michael O’ Doherty, D.D. of Archdiocese of Manila has issued a decree ordering the building of the Santísimo Rosario Parish or most commonly known as the UST Chapel. The said chapel was established on March 21, 1942. This school chapel is not the typical one given its old history and outstanding architecture.

As stated in their vision, Santísimo Rosario Parish is rooted in Christ and devoted to Mary, as instilled with the spirit of St. Dominic.

St. Pancratius Chapel ManilaSt. Pancratius Chapel

Managed by Vincentian fathers

Nestled in Manila City’s Paco Park is St. Pancratius Chapel, also known as Paco Chapel. This round chapel is perfect for intimate weddings and other church celebrations as it can only host up to 150 guests. Paco Chapel is the only one to be found in a park. Aside from memorable weddings, you can also hold photo shoots in this church and nearby area as you appreciate its historic ambiance.

To mention a few celebrities who got married in Paco Chapel are Jay Contreras and Sarah Abad, and Kelly Misa and Carlos Fernandez.

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Shrine exteriorOur Lady of Mt. Carmel Shrine

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel

New Manila, Quezon City, Metro Manila

The parish was established on February 17, 1975, with the titular Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. The feast day that it celebrates is every 16th of July. Many people admire the architectural design and peaceful ambiance of this church. It is perfect for meditation and intimate celebrations such as weddings.

Santo Domingo ChurchSanto Domingo Church (National Shrine of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of La Naval de Manila)

Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario de La Naval de Manila

Dominican Order

Quezon City, Manila

This beautiful church of Santo Domingo is the largest one in Metro Manila and one of the biggest churches in Asia. Before it has become this grand, there were several erected churches prior to such. A small church was built with light materials on August 6, 1587. Unfortunately, an earthquake destroyed it. The Dominicans then thought of having a bigger church with stronger materials. Thus, resulting to its second church out of stones and inaugurated on April 9, 1592. There have been more buildings as disasters and calamities continue to challenge the big church.

The current building of Santo Domingo Church is the sixth church already in its new location. Mar Roxas and Korina Sanchez decided to get married in Santo Domingo Church.

Ermita ChurchErmita Church (Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Guidance)

La Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Guía

Ermita, Manila

What makes Ermita Church special is it hosts the Marian image of Our Lady of Guidance or Nuestra Señora de Guia. It is said that this Marian image is the oldest one in the country. Ermita Church had its humble beginnings as it was made of bamboo, nipa and molave wood to house the image of Our Lady of Guidance. Spanish soldiers found the image during the reign of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi in 1571. The simple shrine became a chapel in 1606 and then called La Ermita.

San Miguel Church

San Miguel Church (Regal Parish and National Shrine of Saint Michael and the Archangels)

Founded by the Jesuits

San Miguel, Manila

San Miguel Church is also known as Malacañang Church as it is very near to the Malacañang Palace. This Catholic church is dedicated to the seven archangels namely Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, Saint Raphael, Saint Uriel, Saint Selatiel, Saint Jhudiel and Saint Barachiel.

San Miguel Church started as a stone church in 1603, initiated by the Jesuits in Paco, Manila. Unfortunately, the 1645 Luzon earthquake has heavily damaged it. In 1913, San Miguel Church has been reconstructed. In terms of its aesthetics, it flaunts a European Baroque architecture and symmetrical bell towers.

Additional information about this notable church is that on May 1, 1954, former and late president Ferdinand E. Marcos and Imelda Romualdez were married at San Miguel Church.

Our Lady of the Abandoned MarikinaOur Lady of the Abandoned

Dambana ng Ina ng Mga Walang Mag-ampon

Marikina City, Metro Manila

In the small city of Marikina, you will find this gorgeous church famously known as “OLA.” In 1902, there was a news that an image of Virgin Mary appeared. You can find the image in OLA Parish Church.  Pope Benedict XVI has venerated the image miraculous in 2005. It has gone through several reconstructions, but the traditional architecture and segmental arches are still the same. You will appreciate its beauty more when the chandeliers are on lighting the whole church with soft yellow.

The wedding season may have been behind us now, but that doesn’t mean that weddings can only be done at specific times of the year. It only needs time for preparation, reservation of venues (since some of these churches tend to be packed with weddings, baptisms, and all sorts of celebrations all throughout the year), proper budgeting, and discerning that the person you are going to marry is the person that you see yourself with through all the blessings and pains that life may bring.

We hope that the listed above churches in Manila for wedding would be a great help for you. Happy hunting!

Your dream wedding doesn’t always have to be far from home. The perfect venue for your wedding just might be around the corner; you just have to look closer.

Check Your Castle, Princess!

The venue of your wedding ceremony is one of the major elements in your wedding as a whole. That’s why it’s important to consider some factors before considering the venue to be the right one. Here are some basic factors that you may need to consider in choosing your wedding ceremony site:

1) The Location and Accessibility

You need to get real on this one. When you pick a venue, you need to consider its accessibility to you and the majority of your guests. This will lessen the chance of the program starting late and some of your guests leaving early because it would take hours for them to get home. Less hassle, right?

2) Parking

Whether your venue is near or far, you can expect that some of your guests will travel by their own car. So make sure that the venue you will pick has ample space for parking to avoid inconvenience.

3) Building Design and Structure

Once you’ve picked a concept or a specific theme for your wedding, it’s important to consider that it matches your venue’s atmosphere and visual appearance.

4) History

There are some couples who take into account the history of a venue. It may be because the nature of the Filipinos to believe in pamahiin or superstitions, or it may be relevant to the concept of the wedding or in the relationship of the couple.

5) Venue Size

In the venue size, the first to consider in this is the number of guests. But you’ll have to consider other factors too, like the space for the food (if you’re having a buffet), the band, space for props and designs, production team, etc. There’s a saying that goes, “Okay lang ang sobra, ‘wag lang kulang.” You wouldn’t want your venue to be too crowded because it might spoil the ambience or mood of the ceremony (and the party, if you’re going to have a 2-in-1 venue). Allow yourself and your guests to have a breathing space.

6) Lighting

To achieve that picturesque look, the venue has to have a good lighting, whether it is day or night. For the production team who will be documenting your wedding ceremony, this is an important factor. You may also want to consult with them regarding this. If you’re gonna hire a light & sounds team, make sure you’ll get your money’s worth.

7) Safety

You’ll never know when danger comes, but it’s better to be prepared than not. A standard protocol for every venue would be to have a fire extinguisher near by the function rooms and a first aid kit. The lights and outlets must be functioning properly as well. You may also need to ask if the venue had critical situations before. Check if the parking lot or valet is safe and the locations of fire exits just in case.

8) Sanitation

Your venue may be Instagram-worthy, but you cannot ignore if the restrooms are well-kept or not. This is also important especially if your guests are fully polished. There should be soap, hand dryer, and tissues. If you’ve taken the time to design (or hired/asked someone to design your wedding), why not the restrooms too? Your guests will definitely commend you for it. Not only the restrooms, but you also need to check if the whole venue is clean as well.

9) Budget

If you have a limited budget for a venue, stick to it. No matter how perfect a venue seems to be, if it’s gonna leave you sinking in debt, don’t take it. You need to be wise on spending your money especially when the big day is over. Don’t spend beyond your means.

Keep this in handy and make sure that your venue has most of these—if not all—checked.

Making the Most of Your Wedding Venue – The Right Questions to Ask

In the Philippines, wedding reception venues are a plenty. There are La Castellana, Baluarte de San Diego and Plaza Moriones in Intramuros if you want a historic wedding. Your other choices are 55 Events Place and Light of Love Events Place in Tomas Morato and Santol Street in Quezon City, respectively, and the ever-reliable Oasis Manila which is located in San Juan.

Choosing the right venue is a critical part of any wedding. When you have chosen the right venue, only then you can maximize such to your advantages. Preparing the wedding venue itself is equally important. Here are the right questions to ask so you can make the most of your carefully chosen venue.

1) Is this a full-service venue or not?

There are only two main types of wedding venues: full-service and place-only. Full-service venues offer not just the place, but also other services such as chair and table rentals, catering paraphernalia rentals, chauffeur services, etc. If it is a place-only venue, you need to book other vendors.

Before you do that though, you might also want to ask…

2) Should we be using the vendors of your choice?

The majority of the venues have a list of accredited catering services and florists. An events place expects its clients to use any of these. Thereby, ask if the caterer of your choice is included in the list or not. If not and you still want to use your catering provider, then you have to pay the corkage fee. The fee is usually 20% of the total bill.

In some instances, there are separate corkage fees for food and wine. Standard fees vary although some venues charge on a per bottle basis for wine. On the other hand, paying the fee is not always a bad thing. Some events places sell wines at triple the markup, so it is wiser to pay the corkage than to pay a hefty tag per bottle.

If you are not comfortable with the idea of paying your chosen caterer and the facility for its fees, you may want to ask your preferred caterer first about which venues they are accredited to. In this way, you can save yourself some serious cash that will otherwise go to the fees. Nonetheless, you need to choose a catering provider that is accredited to different types of events places so you can still shop around for the perfect venue.

3) Can you accommodate this number of people?

When you inquire about the availability of the place, the management would normally ask ‘for how many guests?’ With this, you must have a rough estimate of your wedding size and for the facility management would be able to plan the arrangements accordingly.

Consider asking…

4) Do you have an in-house Facility Manager?

If the events place says yes, ask if he or she will be there on your wedding day. A Facility Manager coordinates the people, groups, space and infrastructure at your wedding reception. He or she will be your go-to person, so make sure that this person is present on your wedding day should anything goes awry. Possibly, secure a copy of the Facility Manager’s duties.

However, not all venues and events places have this on their overhead so better ask about this. Some events places have on-call Facility Managers. With this arrangement, you have to establish whether the management or you should be paying for his or her services. If the management is going to pay the Facility Manager, there is no need to pay for the service rendered. A tip is not expected anyhow, but for superb service, this is highly accepted and appreciated.

If the facility provides no additional facility coordination services, you might as well ask if you can bring in your own Facility Manager. Perhaps, your wedding coordinator may also act as the Facility Manager.

5) Is a shuttle service from the ceremony to the reception included in the package?

Making on-the-day transportation arrangements is a no brainer. Definitely, you want your wedding to run as smoothly as possible.

Shuttle services may or may not be included in the package. If not, your next option is to rent cars, vans, coasters, mini buses, etc. Just make sure there is an ample parking space to accommodate all these. Also, ask if there will be a parking attendant who ensures that the area is organized and presentable.

6) Will there be other weddings booked on my wedding day?

Some venues accommodate one event per day only. While exclusive venues are a bit pricey, the place is all yours. You need not worry where your guests will wander especially the kids. The best part is, you can plan your reception based on the available spaces in both indoors and outdoors.

Further, there are massive events places that can book up to 3 or 4 weddings per day. If you are booking this, make sure that you will be getting the actual time that is alloted for your event as well as the allotted areas.

Perhaps, you should be asking…

7) Are there any restrictions for the photographers and videographers?

There are venues that designate specific areas for photo opportunities. This means that you and your guests are not allowed to take snaps whenever and wherever they want. Main photo opportunities happen during the reception. The problem is, you cannot utilize the venue for this purpose as possible due to the restrictions.

Regardless of which type of venue of you choose, consider having a pre-wedding visit your photographer and videographer. Your team needs to get acquainted with the venue so they may plan the best shots on your big day.

8) How many hours can we use the venue?

Majority of the events places can be used for up to 6 hours. Beyond the alloted time, the management will charge for overstaying usually on a per hour basis. Your main concerns are: the information should be written on your contract and the guests must be aware of the timeline of your wedding.

Ingress and egress may or may not be included in the count of hours. Better make sure with the management though by asking how early the catering service, for instance, can get into the place to set up everything.

Don’t forget to ask…

9) Do you have a contingency plan?

Other than the inclement weather, there may be unpredictable circumstances that may affect your plans at the venue. Ask about the venue’s air conditioning, lighting and sound systems, if there are any.

Not to mention, there may be special accommodations that some of your guests may request in the middle of your wedding planning. Are you inviting people with disabilities which means that the venue must have a full wheelchair access.

10) Will there be any planned changes to the venue before my wedding?

Venues and facilities upgrade their amenities from time to time, and your chosen reception venue is having a landscape change weeks before your wedding. We cannot emphasize enough the need to visit the venue at the time of day as your wedding day. In this way, you would know how the elements fall into their place like the lighting. It is important to know what goes into which and which goes into where.

If there will be changes that you and your coordinators are not aware of then, your plans are definitely messed up.

After announcing your engagement, you will be bombarded with questions as to when and where. While the when can be easily answered, some couples find it difficult to answer the where questions. There are many choices of wedding venues here in the country, but the question is: is this the most appropriate venue for my big day? Above are some of the questions that you have to answer in choosing the wedding that you think would be perfect for your wedding.

The Importance of Food Tastings

For today’s engaged couples, it shouldn’t be a toss between whether to attend or not to attend a food tasting. On any wedding, food consumes the biggest expense, so attending a food tasting is an absolute must. No food catering services Quezon City or elsewhere for that matter cannot be emphasized enough that no engaged couple must ignore or deliberately skip a food tasting.

Aside from being an inherent component of what you will be paying for, there are other things that a food tasting alone can reveal about whether the actual wedding day will be a success or not, catering-wise.

1) Food tastings allow you to – what else – taste the food!

Some couples would say that, ‘Oh, the food looks awesome on the photos. It’ll surely taste fine!’ In most cases, okay is not acceptable; it should be great. It is your wedding after all.

For one, you will be able to sample the dishes from the hors d’oeuvres to desserts which will be specifically prepared for your wedding. In some instances, the caterer of your choice will let you meet the chef behind the dishes. He or she will have a better idea of your taste preferences such as whether the main course is too bland, too salty, or too sauce-y for you.

While at it, you must tell the caterer or the chef the truth. Food tastings are the perfect venue to express how you are feeling and air concerns about the food including dietary specifications for the folks, children, and vegetarians, for example. The catering provider would love to hear feedback beforehand so that they can make adjustments rather than hearing complaints on the wedding day itself.

Adjustments are necessary especially if you know who among your guests are allergic to what and which ingredient. The chef may also recommend specific dishes more so if you have a particular food theme in mind. Chefs are more than willing to share what they know and contribute to the success of your wedding like every should be. As such, food tastings often lead to creating the final menu.

It is not just about the different dishes on the table, but the quality of such and of every ingredient that goes into the dish. Salads must be fresh. Vegetables should not be soggy and brightly colored. Baked breads should be soft and chewy. Cheeses must be moist. In particular, how well-prepared the dishes served during the food tasting is an indicator of the caterer’s attention to detail or lack thereof. Not to mention, caterers have very different interpretations of various cuisines.

2) Food tastings allow you to better understand the catering package of your choice.

Wedding caterers can only do so much to customize your menu. Nevertheless, if you opt to choose from the packages, these are already inclusive of standard menu and amenities. Caterers themselves want clients to choose a package first before the food tasting and booking, so there will be no need to prepare foods that the client will not sample.

The standard menu is 2-4 appetizers, 1-2 salads, 1-2 pork or beef dishes, 1 chicken dish, 1 veggie dish and 1-2 desserts–although these may vary depending on the provider. There are caterers who serve only the planned menu based on the pre-chosen package.

Furthermore, food tastings give you a real feel of what’s to expect on your wedding day including how the buffet table and individual tables will be set up. You’d also know how the food will be presented to you and the guests from skirting to centerpieces to dinnerware, flatware, and glassware.

Eventually, you may decide whether to pursue your chosen package initially or replace an inclusion or two from another package. This is how caterers customize a wedding package to suit the needs and preferences of the clients. Through this, the package will include only those that the to-be-weds will like to see and eat on their wedding day.

3) Food tastings allow you to see everything else other than the food.

Caterers must provide excellent services at all times. You’d see the consistency and professionalism in the staff’s level of service provision. You can point this out to your caterer during the tasting so you will get the kind of service that your wedding and guests deserve.

Take notice of the staffs’ attentiveness. If it is a buffet tasting–which is common nowadays–observe how and how often the staff replenishes the food. You may also easily observe how the wait staff handles the requests of the attendees of the tasting event. How they are at the food tasting will be how they will be on your actual wedding day.

Other important reminders

Bear in mind that not all catering services in Quezon City, Manila, or Pasig provide food tasting. Some offer group food tasting so many future clients get to experience their flavor and style. Some servs a du jour style food tasting especially those caterers that also operate their own restaurant. In the food industry, du jour means made specifically for that day.

Some caterers even ask for a food tasting fee and additional fee if you bring more than the allowed number of participants (typically 3-4 persons) and based on your own culinary choices. Food tastings are both expensive and labor intensive, and some couples are just shopping around to find the catering provider with the best fit.

Whatever it may be, food tastings should be scheduled ahead of time because the catering kitchen personnel may not be able to readily prepare the samples for you and your companion then and there. Plan ahead and align and confirm your schedule with the caterer of your choice. Food tastings normally last for an hour or two.

Requests that are beyond the standard provisions may incur additional charges. Additional costs may be paid at a later date (usually included in the final billing). That’s why it is crucial that you understand the inclusions of the chosen package especially if you have already signed the contract before the food tasting.

Think of a food tasting as a dress rehearsal, a walk-through on what to expect during your big day. It is a first glimpse of what such special day will look like, well at least, when it comes to the food. Remember that your guests will forget your wedding date, your wedding gown, your bridal party, etc., but they will always remember the food and how the food made them feel during that day. So, make sure that this one counts.

Important Tips in Choosing the Right Wedding Venue

A wedding is a multi-decision event, and decisions are often divided into two major categories: wedding ceremony and wedding reception. Aside from the food that can be taken care of the catering in Philippines, choosing the best venue can often consume much of the couple’s time.

Further, there are hundreds of venues in the Philippines such as Blue Leaf Events Pavilion, Palacio de Maynila, Rockwell Tent, Baluarte de San Diego, Gazebo Royale, The Elements at Eton Centris, Blue Gardens, etc. However, you cannot just choose any venue without these important considerations.

One Esplanade1

Space

Apparently, the venue must have a roomy fit. The reception site must be large enough to accommodate the total number of guests. At first glance, a venue may look huge, but wedding essentials (chairs, tables, buffet setup, band setup, dance floor, etc.) consume a lot of space. Your guests will need some elbow room so take this into account.

Estimates are, sometimes, unreliable. A contingency is to take a peek at the venue when it is all setup, for another wedding that is. Just make sure that the size of the guest list is similar as yours so you can have a near-accurate estimate.

Light of Love

Areas

Eating, drinking, talking, and dancing are the four primary activities on any wedding reception. There must be logical areas for these activities.

When conducting a location inspection, stand in one corner and try to envision where do you think these activities would happen. If the place cannot be separated into sections accordingly, it will probably feel crowded on your wedding day.

Look at the ‘shape’ of the venue. If there are odd contours or blockages, the people at the back may not see what is happening at the front. These factors can compromise the actual flow of the wedding program.

Cities Events Place2

Privacy

Most of the to-be-weds put an importance on privacy. Surely, they would appreciate an intimate and private reception by keeping wedding crashers at bay.

Unless you are okay with the idea of other people peeking on your wedding (true for public receptions), you might as well opt for venues that allow clients to buy out the place (guest-only basis). Ask about security availability.

As much as possible, the venue should accommodate one-event-per-day only. Ask if it is possible to schedule the event when there would not be another event in the next function fall. If not, you can always visit the venue when there is an event and see how the activities would affect other activities in the other halls.

Further, ask whether the halls or rooms are noise-proof or not. This is one way of keeping the wedding free from outside disturbances and uninvited guests.

55 Events

Color

Weddings here in the Philippines often have color motifs. The color of the walls and ceilings and even the décors at the venue must not conflict or clash with your motif, or they will ruin the otherwise great impact of color coordination.

The location need not be in the exact colors as your motif, but the prominent hues at the venue must complement the motif somehow. Not just for visual interest, but contrasting colors may be an eyesore to look at. Make a request to the owner to use a specific color of curtains on your wedding day, if possible.

For brunch and day weddings, venues in light and pastel colors are perfect. For classic weddings, venues in darker hues or neutrals are ideal.

Sampaguita2

Lighting

Lights make or break the overall mood at the venue. For a day wedding, make sure that your chosen venue has lots of windows. For night weddings, make sure that the location is not too dim. Make sure that the lighting at the entryways and dining areas can be controlled. For a night wedding outdoors, you may determine whether setting up candles is possible.

Again, go to the venue and perform an inspect at the same time when it is your turn to use it. You will get to see how sunlight streams through the windows to the floor. Candlelight is romantic, but this may not be enough during the evening.

Certainly, you can always ask the owner the available lighting fixtures that you can use on your wedding day and whether these are inclusive of the fee or not.

Gazebo Royale1

Acoustics

During an event, you may try to inspect the sound quality of the setting. Make sure that it is not too echoey because it can let out weird reverbs when the band is playing. With this too, it would be difficult for your guest to hear other people when they talk.

On the contrary, you can choose to tailor the music based on the acoustic conditions of the venue. Remember that wood or tile floors amplify the sounds while thick carpets muffle them. Thus, if you opt for a small venue, you may choose a combo instead of an orchestra.

Baluarte2

View

It’s always a plus to choose venues that offer a stunning view of the city skyline, lush greeneries, waves, etc. Nonetheless, if there are no views per se, perhaps the venues décors will do or its architectural details, artworks on the walls, period furniture pieces or crystal chandeliers.

Whatever it may be, the details can make the venue extra special. Not to mention, they can preoccupy the guests while waiting for the program to start. They are also great conversation pieces to break the ice between strangers.

Outlets

Perform a thorough inspection of the venue to determine if it has enough outlets to plug things that need plugging in. This is especially true if your chosen venue doesn’t regularly host a wedding. Take note of the exact places of the outlets.

If there aren’t enough outlets against your needs for them, make sure that the venue has several extension cords.

Parking

Most venues today have ample parking with uniformed security personnel. Nevertheless, if there aren’t any evident parking spaces, make sure there is an empty street where guests can park legally.

Alternatively, you may organize activities so everyone can get to the party without worrying too much with parking such shuttle vans or bus. Carpooling is another good option.

You can always go the other way around such as choosing a reception first before deciding for other wedding essentials like your guest list or choosing the venue before deciding for a wedding date so you’d ensure that the place is all yours. Whichever you choose, keep these helpful tips in mind when choosing the perfect venue.
