5 Things Every Kiddie Party Should Have

Kiddie parties can be as simple or complicated as you want them to be, and it all depends on what your child wants. Here are the basic things you need to create a successful kiddie party that everyone will enjoy:

1. Theme

It’s easy to come up with a theme if you focus on what your child wants. It only gets complicated when the parents get into it to try and make it more “unique”. There have been birthday parties with grouchy birthday celebrants because they felt uncomfortable with the theme—either the little boy wanted a car theme rather than a stuffy prince theme, or the little girl wanted an outdoor picnic, rather than the dainty tea party that the parents wanted. Observe your child to see what they love to play with, or love watching on TV, to get a hint on what theme they’d like to have.

2. Guests

Will it be a small gathering of your friends’ kids, or will you be opening it up to your own friends? It depends on how comfortable your child is with new faces—some love being around new people, which some children will get moody or cry when they’re in a sea of strangers. The second thing to consider when making your guest list is to how many you can truly afford. Each guest is another mouth to feed and more space to have, so the more guests you have, the more money you’ll need to spend.

3. Venue

The venue sets the tone of your party. Plus, some venues are already filled with nice backgrounds and instagrammable interiors, which you might not even need to bring in an events designer to spruce the place up. Match the venue to your theme—the more out of the box your venue is, the better.

4. Food

Whether you decide on having a buffet, a plated, sit down meal, or a cooking party, offer up food that both kids and parents will enjoy. And while a dessert spread will always be a hit, it won’t fill up a hungry stomach. Serve heavier food, like pasta or something meaty.

5. Cake

What makes birthdays so special is that the party is thrown in someone’s honor—all eyes are on them, and your child is the center of attention. The best way that this is expressed is through the blowing of the candles on a birthday cake, while everyone sings “Happy Birthday”. Whether you choose a big or small cake, chocolate or vanilla, with characters or not—don’t skip this birthday tradition. Your child deserves to be celebrated!
